Southwest Florida Eagle Cam

Check out the Southwest Florida Eagle Cam!  A pair of bald eagles are caring for a pair of bald eagle eggs which are close to hatching (as of December 28, 2016).  They also have videos of previous activity from the nest.  What an exciting experience to watch as we learn about the Bald Eagle in our American Symbols unit.

Frosty Day!

To celebrate our last day before Christmas Break, CCE had a Frosty Day!  It was a fun filled day with STEM activities, a treat walk and a special showing of Frosty the Snowman!  We began our day watching a Reader's Theater performance of the book Snowmen at Night by some of our very talented CCE staff!

After finishing a writing activity craft, we found a gift from Jingles!  He left us brand new crayons in our crayon boxes, Elf on the Shelf Band-aids, and the Elf on the Shelf movie (which we enjoyed as we ate lunch!).  We also drew pictures and wrote letters for Jingles.  The letters below say "Jingles Good bye" and "Bye Jingles.  The whole class will miss you.  Merry Christmas.  We love you."  We will really miss having Jingles around after Christmas!

Next we began our STEM rotations.  Our class visited 3 stations where we learned about how salt melts ice, saw a chemical reaction with 'erupting snowballs', and made marshmallow snowflakes.  It was fun to share these activities with different classes and students enjoyed visiting other classrooms! For the ice melting, students observed plain ice cubes and ice cubes that we sprinkled salt on to see if the salt helped the ice melt faster.  For erupting snowballs, students did a version of the experiment found here:  Erupting Snowballs.  For marshmallow snowflakes, students were given one large marshmallow, toothpicks, a lot of mini marshmallows and designed their own snowflake.

To end our day, students went on a walk through a Winter Wonderland to get treats for our Frosty Movie!  Thank you to everyone who sent in candy canes, juice boxes and Hershey Kisses!  When we returned to class, students also made a snowman treat to enjoy.  While we watched our Frosty movie, students each made a bag of reindeer food - don't forget to sprinkle it on the lawn on Christmas Eve!

It was truly a magical, fun filled day!  We hope all of our families enjoy time together over our break and have a Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!  We will see you all again on January 2nd when we return to school.

Jingles Update & Candy Cane Science!

This has been a very fun week in Room 004!  Jingles returned once again and surprised us by popping up all around our classroom!  He also left pencils and erasers in our crayon boxes and notes for a few special students on the tree.

We enjoyed a few fun activities as well as we approached Christmas break.  We reviewed beginning sounds (using our new pencils!), searched the room for teen numbers, independently followed directions to make our own reindeer, practiced popcorn words and learned about winter from our Scholastic News booklet.
On Thursday, we were excited to have friends from Mrs. Chatfield's 4th Grade class join us for Candy Cane Science!  Students from each class paired up to find out if candy canes would sink or float and explored candy canes using their five senses!  Our 4th grade friends were excellent guides during the activity and really helped our students understand by discussing their observations.  We look forward to future collaborations with our new 4th grade friends this year!

A Peek at our Week! December 5-9, 2016

We had a (mostly) great week in Room 004 last week!  Jingles continued to return, surprising us as he popped up all over the room!  On Thursday, he brought us a craft to make since we did not have a related arts class.  We enjoyed singing and creating our very own snowflake ornaments (and did I mentioned he let us use glitter!).  We did get a warning on Friday for being too loud.  Jingles even wore ear muffs so we didn't hurt his ears!

We also finished a 2 week mini series on The Gingerbread Man!  Each day we read a different version of this story and discussed the characters, settings, and endings of each one!  (We may read a few more this week since they enjoyed them so much!).  Ask your student which one they enjoyed the most!

We also began working with teen numbers and made a Christmas Countdown Chain!  Each student should have a chain.  We hope they remember to remove a link each day and read the number to you!

Check back later this week for more updates and for a report on our Frosty Day on Friday!! :)

Jingles Day 4 & 5

Happy Friday!  We are so lucky to have our elf Jingles!  He is a nice and kind elf.  On Thursday, we found him perched in a Crayola chair on top of our cabinet and he left us a gift (a new book!) under the tree.  On Friday, we found Jingles snuggled with our Reindeer with a new ornament on our tree.  Later that day, when we returned from related arts, we found a present from Jingle by the tree.  He gave us supplies to make ornaments of our very own!!  We had a great time making our ornaments and singing as we ended our day.

In other news, this week we have been working on our next writing display.  On Monday, we learned all about reindeer!  The rest of the week was spent working on a reindeer writing and craft for our hallway display.  Students also had the opportunity to practice their opinion writing skills!  We are doing a great job of sounding out our words and using our popcorn words!!  One of our favorite ways to writ this time of year is by our "fire" with our Christmas lights (see picture above).  It's a great way to enjoy the season with a little classical Christmas music
